The importance of lime mortars.
Lime mortars help reduce the ingress of water to your property through the mortar joints, this helps moisture to dissipate thereby allowing the building to breathe and reducing the risk of frost damage.
Cement mortars are too hard for a period property, as they have no flexibility, limited breathability and high durability.
Cement cannot accommodate movement and cant self repair itself like a lime mortar can.
Cement pointing traps water and the only way it can get out is through the brick, this is very bad, as the bricks stay wet and when temperatures drop the water freezes in the brick causing the brick to perish (spalling)
period property's around the UK especially in London have been ruined by cement pointing, cement rendering and other impervious materials as during the 1960's and 1970's cement was cheap and builders did not know any better.
Buildings need to stay dry and using lime mortars help massively.
